Strategic Vision
Stonington Harbor Yacht Club
The Board of Governors has undertaken the vital task of defining a long-range strategic plan for our Club. It is important for all members to understand the guiding principles that frame our effort. First, we have formed SHYC as an `inclusive club' which embraces the community at large. Secondly, we want to be respected by all those who love boating, and by our neighbors in the community, because they derive value from the fact that we promote excellence in activities that take place on our shared asset...the water.
What does this mean for SHYC 5 to 10 years from now? We will be successful in realizing our mission if:
-
Non-members recognize our burgee as a standard of boating excellence.
-
The community widely supports SHYC, because it directly benefits from our programs and is included in many activities that enhances enjoyment of the area.
-
The year-round activities in our clubhouse become a magnet for new members;
-
The clubhouse is a place where members of all ages just want to hang out together.
-
Our Club gains reciprocity with other clubs up and down the coast and our cruisers are welcomed everywhere.
-
Our junior sailors are respected and, often enough, victorious in area team racing that consistently teaches good seamanship, values of sportsmanship and friendly competition.
-
Increasing number of adults get `turned on' to sailing in the adult classes.
-
Our `Sailor's Evenings' are oversold in the community because of superior content.
-
The SHYC Power Squadron meets the annual sailboat cruise in port far from home for a marvelous rendezvous party.
-
There is vibrant one design racing off the jetties every weekend year round.
-
After a day out on the water.. the adult sailing class, our J-24 teams back from a race, the Power Squadron returning from a predicted log race, day sailors returning from Block Island, Junior sailing team returning victorious and the kayakers from Sandy Point all converge on the SHYC clubhouse to swap stories of the day's adventures or meet family, friends and guests for dinner.
Most importantly, SHYC members exhibit a sense of pride in membership because they derive value from so many facets of our activities.
