The most important question prospective new members ask is, why join SHYC? What makes this club different? How will it add value for me? Each of us has our own view, of course; but here are mine:
- SHYC has established a reputation for being a high-quality, dynamic organization where a diverse set of programs and activities create an environment for achievement and friendship.
- We are an inclusive club. This means that, whether you are a seasoned yachtsman or are just taking up boating, this Club aims at adding value to your life through a helpful association with others who share your interests and can support your boating aims.
- SHYC’s programs are the broadest in the area — we have superb resources for beginners and experts, for racers and cruisers, for sailors and motor-boaters. Our youth programs have won regional regard, as have our adult education classes and on-shore events promoting skills and safety. We support adventure — friendly group cruises throughout New England, the thrill of 12-meter sailing —but always do so in a responsible way. And we not only deliver a quality experience for members, but we reach out whenever possible to benefit the community at large.
- Where we’re located is a huge plus! Stonington is one of the region’s best harbors — and we are enhancing everyone’s enjoyment of it. We are also building a network of reciprocal relationships with clubs up and down the east coast, in other US cities, and internationally, which will not only bring visitors to Stonington, but open their doors to us.
- We are building this Club together. I have not been able to find evidence of another Club which has financed a major club house via the equal collaboration of all members. This “we are all in it together” approach has supported a feeling of equality and also seems to have promoted a ‘can do culture’ which has been driving SHYC forward in all sorts of ways.
- We are a year-round, professionally managed club which is about to open the region’s newest Clubhouse facility, truly a “state of the art” base. But even before we had a year-round ‘home’ SHYC developed a significant number of activities during the off-season. These have been useful and fun, and have kept us connected to SHYC and to each other. Imagine what programming can be like with our new Clubhouse, its meeting spaces, dining facilities, and friendly informal bar, and all its other amenities!
- Finally, by joining now, a new member can still have the opportunity of being on the 'ground floor’ of SHYC’s development, a creative part of shaping our Club’s future.
