Build Sailing & Racing Skills

With Rodney Johnstone

All you sailors out there who envy the experts and wonder how they always get their boats to go a little faster, round race marks a little quicker, win races a lot more often: our resident expert, Rod Johnstone, has offered to givesailing  lessons on how to trim your sails better, select your point of sail more logically, tack and gibe like you should plus all those good things that will make you a better racing sailor and a better sailor in general.

Starting July 2, and on each of the succeeding seven Fridays having a PHRF race scheduled, Rod will give instructions to three or four lucky people using hisown J-80. While these lessons will include some racing tips, they will not specifically be lessons on racing skills but, rather, on sound sailing practices, basic boat handling, crewing, and teamwork.

These instructions will start at 1300 hours and continue until about 1600 hours giving you time to join your own boat for the Friday Twilight races and use your added skills. The instructions are intended for those who have some experience sailing their own boat or crewing. Racing experience is not required. Participants must be more than 18 years old and must be members of Stonington Harbor Yacht Club.

If you are interested in sailing with Rod one of these afternoons, message shycracecom@aol.com giving your name, date(s) you would prefer, sailing skill level (very good, OK, not so good), e-mail address. We will let you know when you are scheduled and where to meet Rod. There will be a lot of demand for these sessions so get your name on the list early.
